Romans 6 - The Greek Text of Romans: A Text Critical Study

In the text that follows, the textual base is the edition of Westcott and Hort. The student is required to collate (compare) this text with the text of Nestle-Aland 27. To do this the student need merely compare, word for word, the text found following and the text printed in Nestle, noting all variations, no matter how small. I do no comment on every variant in what follows; only the more significant. But, again, the student is required to note every variant.

Several of the ancient versions omit the connective "then" because the scribes of those versions were unable to determine the reason for the connective. Other versions substituted "for" for "then". But the external attestation of the reading as it stands above is almost irrefutable.

After "in Christ Jesus" the TR adds "our Lord". This addition is found in ), C, K, P, 33, 81, 614, 1739 and others. The addition is absent, however, from such texts as h46, A, B, D, G, Y, and several of the early versions. The expansions seems purely secondary.

12 MH OUN BASILEUETW H AMARTIA EN TW QNHTW UMWN SWMATI EIS TO UPAKOUEIN TAIS EPIQUMIAIS AUTOU

The last three words are omitted and replaced by auth in h46, D, G, and It(g). The text as is stands above is found in ), A, B, C*, 81, and 1739. The difficulty of here is self evident when one considers the weight of the evidence. However it seems to me that the reading of auth in h46, D, G, and It(g) is most likely original and the other reading merely a clarifying expansion.
